The full moon has long been associated with the supernatural, often portrayed as a time when ghosts and other paranormal entities are most active. This belief is rooted in ancient folklore and has been passed down through generations.
But is there really a connection between full moons and ghosts? Or is it just a spooky coincidence?
Let's delve into the creepy connection between full moons and ghosts and explore the possible explanations behind this eerie phenomenon.
The History of Full Moons and Ghosts
The belief in the relationship between full moons and ghosts can be traced back to ancient civilizations. In many cultures, the full moon was seen as a time of heightened spiritual energy, when the veil between the living and the dead was at its thinnest.
I can remember when I was still in my teen age,we do go out looking for snails mainly during the full moon, one thing I observed is that most of us who went out for the night hours to look for snails always took their heels, when questioned, they always narrate how they came across creepy beings, though I never witnessed such a thing, but the way things were going on then made me believe them, because after the incidence, anyone who was a victim of this ghost of a thing would rather decides not to come along with us anymore for fear of ghost, when I asked my parents about this,it was my mom who told me that spirits do come out mainly during the full moon than any other time, according to the experience she had from her father who was a hunter.
In Nigeria, stories of ghosts are heard more especially during this full moon hours, which made me more cautious.
In ancient Greek mythology, it was believed that the full moon brought out the supernatural powers of the gods and goddesses, including those of the underworld. This is why many ghost stories and legends from Greek mythology involve the full moon.
In medieval Europe, the full moon was associated with witches and black magic, and it was believed that witches were most powerful during this phase. This fear of witches and their alleged ability to communicate with the dead may have contributed to the belief in a connection between full moons and ghosts.
During the 19th and 20th centuries, the full moon was also linked to mental illness and strange behavior, leading to the term "lunacy" which comes from the Latin word for moon, "luna." This idea that the full moon could affect human behavior may have also played a role in the belief that it could also affect the spirit world.
Scientific Explanations
While there is no concrete scientific evidence to support the idea that full moons have a direct influence on ghosts, there are a few possible explanations for this phenomenon.
The first is the idea of the "moon illusion," which is a visual perception that makes the moon appear larger and closer to the earth when it is near the horizon. This illusion can also make objects and surroundings appear distorted and eerie, which may contribute to the feeling of a heightened supernatural presence during a full moon.
Another possible explanation is the effect of the full moon on human behavior. Studies have shown that the full moon can affect our sleep patterns and mood, leading to increased irritability and restlessness. This may make people more susceptible to believing they are experiencing paranormal activity, rather than it actually occurring.
The full moon is also associated with higher levels of light pollution, which can make shadows and other visual phenomena appear more pronounced. This can create a heightened sense of fear and unease, making people more likely to believe they are seeing ghosts or other supernatural entities.
Cultural Influence
The belief in a connection between full moons and ghosts has also been perpetuated by popular culture. Many horror movies and books feature full moons as a time when ghosts are most active, further cementing this association in our minds.
Additionally, many ghost tours and paranormal investigations are often scheduled around the full moon, adding to the belief that this is when ghosts are most likely to appear.
It's possible that this cultural influence has contributed to the belief in the full moon's connection to ghosts, as people may be more likely to attribute any strange occurrences during this time to supernatural forces.
Final Thoughts
While there is no concrete evidence to support the idea that full moons directly influence ghosts and other paranormal activity, the belief in this connection persists. Whether it is rooted in ancient folklore, scientific explanations, or cultural influences, the full moon continues to hold a mysterious and spooky appeal.
So the next time you hear a strange noise or catch a glimpse of something out of the corner of your eye during a full moon, just remember that there may be a more logical explanation behind it. But then again, you never know what may be lurking in the shadows during this eerie phase of the moon.
